BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY – IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST
The director, Rodger Sorensen, wanted to capture the idea of a light and frivolous comedy. To create character and an airy light visual, Sarah based each character’s design on an ice cream flavor that represented their personality and used the color palette for their design.

CHARACTERS & THE DESIGN PROCESS
A dapper and debonair high society man, Algernon, is the frivolous and silly best friend of the lead character Earnest. Mustaches were the facial hair statement for men of wealth of the 1890’s and was the obvious choice for Algernon as was Chunky Monkey ice cream for his color palette.
A proper high society woman, Gwendolen, is the sophisticated love interest of Earnest. Gibson hair styles were the most fashionable of the time period and Gwendolen’s mother, Lady Bracknell, kept her up on the latest styles. Berry Sorbet was her flavor to help convey her vibrancy and wealth.
A man abandoned in a railway station, Jack, a low society man who has built up his wealth and status he is the lead and the center point of all of the comedic encounters. Jack has a style that is consistent with new money and a social climber. Rocky Road was his flavor and color palette due to his absurd origin story and rocky path to his happily ever after.
A timid and mild woman, Miss Prism, is a governess in the household of Jack. Her flavor Clotted Cream and Honey Comb represents her proper and strict nature, but with a little secret about a baby she abandoned in a railway station.
A strict and pompous woman, Lady Bracknell, is the high society mother of Gwendolen and aunt to Algernon. She acts as the obstacle between Jack and Gwendolen. Cherry Cordial was her flavor because of her dedication to tradition and her wealthy status.
A mild and joyous man, Reverend Chasuble, is the love interest to Miss Prism. His flavor was Vanilla Toasted Coconut due to his dedication to tradition and to God, with a little secret about his affections toward Miss Prism.
